One window is enough
Parents often worry that their home isn’t right for photographs. Too small, too busy, not enough light. But I don’t need the whole house. I walk through, find the window with the softest light, and we stay there. Everything on this page was taken in one spot, in their living room.
The details
I started with the small things: the hands, the feet, the curl of an ear. At three weeks they change almost every day, and these are the things that are gone first.
Mom and the baby
Then portraits of mother with the baby, close to the window, the light falling on both of them. Mothers are usually the ones holding the phone, so these are the photographs they almost never have of themselves.
Dad and the baby
Many of the photographs from this session are of father taking care of his baby: feeding, holding close, in the same light by the same window. That’s how their days looked right then, and that’s what I wanted to keep.
The three of them
We finished with all three together, close, holding each other. The first portraits of them as a family.
What an in-home newborn session is like
- Your home doesn’t have to be big or perfect. One good window is enough.
- We go at the baby’s pace. Feeding, changing, settling: we stop whenever the baby needs to.
- Your baby doesn’t have to be a few days old. This little one was three weeks.
- Wear something simple and soft. Plain fabric looks best next to a newborn.
- You’re in the photographs too. Not only the baby, but the two of you holding them.
